From the Greybull KOA: After leaving the gate make a left turn on
2nd Street.
After four blocks turn left on Highway 14. Take Highway 14 east
towards Shell of 7.1 miles.
Pass the old Shell School building (on your left) and turn left onto
Davis Lane.
Follow Davis Lane to the end (1.2 miles) and make a left turn onto
Lane 33.
Along the haul road, the hills are volcanic in nature, and include
bentonite (volcanic dust)
Big Horn County's foremost area export.
It is 3 7/10 miles
from the turn onto Lane33 to the unmarked turnoff to Devil's Kitchen
overlook.
Turn left and proceed 2/10 mile to the overlook.
There, you can see for yourself why it's called the Devil's Kitchen.
After seeing all
this beauty, return to Highway 14, make a left turn in the direction
of Shell,
and follow this road for about three miles, then turn right onto Red
Gulch Road (Scenic byway).
Follow this road for about five miles until you see the markers for
the dinosaur tracksite on the right side of the road.
The Red Gulch
tracksite contains thousands of rare Middle Jurassic age dinosaur
tracks embedded in oolitic limestone.
This site covers 40 acres set aside by the U.S. Government's Bureau
of Land Management.
The tracks at this site were laid down approximately 167 million
years ago by dinosaurs
believed by experts to have been similar to the "raptors" depicted
in the movie Jurassic Park.
The tracks are preserved in limestone in an area that was once a
beach of the Sundance Sea, a vast inland body of water.
During the summer
months, it is not unusual to see international scientists exploring
and working on the many paleontological and geological sites for
which Wyoming is world renowned.
AFTER SUCH A BEAUTIFUL DAY IT'S NICE TO BE BACK AT THE GREYBULL KOA TO
RELAX AT OUR REFRESHING POOL.
